Do you mean that this should be hard coded, or simply that: "inherits" should be set in the: "index.theme" file?

I think that we need to address the issue of generic icons. HiColor was originally supposed to address this, but now this has been screwed up. Our current generic icons were renamed KDEClassic. However, these are a bit dated. I, therefore, suggest that we add a theme for new generic icons which would inherit kdeclassic. This theme would not be complete to start with -- in fact, it would be rather sparse -- and yes, I will volunteer to the the maintainer. I don't know what this should be called but I would suggest "KDEGeneric" so there wouldn't be any further confusion as to what it was supposed to be. In another thread I mention the need to resolve this issue: the spec says: The lookup is done first in the current theme, and then recursively in each of the current theme's parents, and finally in the default theme called "hicolor" (implementations may add more default themes before "hicolor", but "hicolor" must be last). Unfortunately, the Spec doesn't say how this should be implemented. The current release has CrystalSVG hard coded before HiColor and this (especially combined with another bug) causes problems for anyone that doesn't use CrystalSVG. The hard coding of CrystalSVG should be removed. I suggest that this be made configurable with a file containing a list of these additional themes to be searched after the specified inheritance and before HiColor. Otherwise, we should have the two generic themes KDEGeneric & KDEClassic hard coded before HiColor so that when a theme (not an app) is missing an icon that the icon search will substitute a generic icon, rather than one that is strongly themed.

Sorry for saying this was a case of misunderstanding, it is not...as you mentioned in this link the spec says: ' In order to have a place for third party applications to install their icons there should always exist a theme called "hicolor" ' I am not sure how you interpret this to mean that hicolor should be a full icon theme on it's own. This seems like a very poor idea. Why do we keep making the same mistakes? I would like to suggest a really radical solution. We put the HiColor icons in the "hicolor" directory We put the CrystalSVG icons in the "crystalsvg" directory We put the Oxygen icons in the "oxygen" directory. To suggest anything else is insanity. The problem is that we have already screwed things up and this situation is a perfect example of how kludges just keep getting worse -- they never improve. As I see it, the problem is that we don't have a proper set of HiColor icons. Someone moved all the existing HiColor icons to KDEClassic and for some reason all new HiColor icons were removed. Then some HiColor icons were renamed CrystalSVG and some CrystalSVG icons were renamed HiColor. Now GNOME seems to have emulated us and removed their HiColor icons as well. To me this is a real mess. My suggestion, which should hold true even if you don't agree with how I would do things, (and which should be obvious) is that the answer to these issues will not be found by moving icons around and giving them names which don't correspond to their actual style. The answer lies in the code. Changes in code can redirect the search without moving the icons. But it should NOT be hard coded as it is in our current release. The icon search is supposed to fall back to HiColor. The problem is that now neither KDE nor GNOME has a set of HiColor icons to fall back to. The answer to this should be obvious (and it needs to be added to the standard). We need to have a list of secondary backup icon themes that will be searched when a fall back to HiColor doesn't find an icon. I suggest that this be in a file so that it can be easily changed (or changed by the user). The current XDG standard allows this secondary list *before* HiColor but it does not specify how this is to be implemented. We appear to have hard coded CrystalSVG before HiColor and this is a mess for anyone that doesn't use CrystalSVG. This would also work if implemented with a configuration file since it could be changed to what I suggested by adding "hicolor" at the start of the list. So, actually, we don't need to fall back to HiColor; what we need to do is to fall back to the list of fallback icons in a file as this will cover all contingencies.

To clarify this: oxygen should be set as default and should fallback to the monochrome set. This way we can very easily see what needs to be done without the backup set influencing our design ideas on oxygen. (Re-post as Kenneth pointed out that there is no devel list for kdeartwork.) I've started the porting effort of my "Ion" style to KDE4, for the intent of including it in kdeartwork as a replacement for KDE3's "Phase" style. (See http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-artists&m=117632400319686 for the original proposal.) ...and I've immediately run into snags. First, I'm not sure how to port the config parts (the qt4 .ui is producing a class that doesn't take a parent in the constructor, which breaks things, and I'm not sure what the correct way to deal with it is...). Second, adapt-to-kde4-api seems to only work (correctly?) on things that are in svn... or something. So, in order to: - have a safe copy in case porting causes something to go horribly wrong - have a convenient way to ask for help - allow others to assist in the porting - have code in place prior to the coming milestone cutoffs ...would it be OK if I went ahead and committed the un-ported KDE3 code (leaving the building of it disabled until it actually builds, of ourse)?
