Re: [kde-artists] [ATTN: kdeartwork packager] Adding "Ion" tokdeartwork/stylesunfortunately there isn't one. I would suggest kde-devel.
Cross posting is, of course, always possible and probably neccesary to gain
support in certain issues.

Re: [kde-artists] [ATTN: kdeartwork packager] Adding "Ion" tokdeartwork/styles...what's the development list for kdeartwork? :-)
Categories: KDE mailing lists
Re: [kde-artists] [ATTN: kdeartwork packager] Adding "Ion" tokdeartwork/stylesI think that such issues are better asked on a development list, as most
people on this list are concerned with artwork only. Not that we are not
interested but the techincalities involved in such decisions are beyond most
members of this list.
That said, the oxygen team is actively developing a style of it's own for
kde4. I think it would be good to discuss technical issues with developing a
style for kde4 with the other developers actually working on the same stuff.
Although not all issues would be similar perhaps there are overlaps which
would benefit all.

[kde-artists] [ATTN: kdeartwork packager] Adding "Ion" tokdeartwork/stylesI've started the porting effort of my "Ion" style to KDE4, for the
intent of including it in kdeartwork as a replacement for KDE3's "Phase"
style. (See http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-artists&m=117632400319686 for
the original proposal.)
...and I've immediately run into snags. First, I'm not sure how to port
the config parts (the qt4 .ui is producing a class that doesn't take a
parent in the constructor, which breaks things, and I'm not sure what
the correct way to deal with it is...). Second, adapt-to-kde4-api seems
to only work (correctly?) on things that are in svn... or something.
So, in order to:
- have a safe copy in case porting causes something to go horribly wrong
- have a convenient way to ask for help
- allow others to assist in the porting
- have code in place prior to the coming milestone cutoffs
...would it be OK if I went ahead and committed the un-ported KDE3 code
(leaving the building of it disabled until it actually builds, of course)?

Re: [kde-artists] New iconsets for KDE 4Hi Danny,
On Tuesday, 24. April 2007, Danny Allen wrote:
I feel honoured to get Lila mentioned here, but I have to veto on the grounds
of proper, future-safe maintainership.
There have been times when Lila was a thriving community and icons were added
and updated all of the time. During my maintainership times, one contributor
after the other disappeared, and few were stepping up in order to replace
the "first generation". When I was active with Lila, I managed to do a
reasonable amount of icon updates and additions by myself, but work from
outside has been very limited.
There's still a bit of work going on (at least in the Gnome camp, where the
long overdue catch-up release was done by new contributor A_Bein) but on the
whole, I'm not confident about continued maintainership. Myself, I'm on the
brink of making a public announcement that I'm stepping down as KDE set
maintainer, maybe that'll get new contributors motivated to do some work
on the KDE set again. But really, the future of the set is quite unclear.
I do know about the fate of KDE3's icon sets, I recognize the duties of an
icon set maintainer, I do not want to see Lila in a similar position.
While I'm totally committed to free software, my ability of taking
maintainership, attracting new people, and holding up motivation to do this
for a long time (say, the lifetime of KDE4) is clearly lacking, and there's
no replacement in sight who would take over what I did before.
As nice as Lila is, I don't want to see it in kdeartwork.
Regards,
Jakob

[kde-artists] New iconsets for KDE 4Hi all,
With KDE 4 around the corner, it is time to make some changes in the
kdeartwork module to remove the old, unmaintained iconsets and replace them
with those following our visual goals for the KDE 4 era.
I have evaluated the iconsets available at kde-look.org against several
fundamental criteria:
* Completeness
Many iconsets, particularly those of a distinctive style, need to be
reasonably complete, otherwise "gaps" appear across applications.
* Scalable
SVG is a big theme of KDE 4, and provides much more flexibility in
presentation and manipulation of the icons. Plus the source is easily
editable (we have suffered from lack of sources in the past).
* Licence
The iconsets need to have a suitable licence (again, in the past, obtaining
the correct permission and licencing from certain authors has been
difficult).
There were several sets that seemed initially promising, only to fall down
heavily on one or more of these criteria.
However, I have selected three iconsets which fulfil these criteria:
* Lila - http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=39469
* Nuvola - http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Nuvola?content=5358
* Primary - http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=39469
(As a bonus, their creators/maintainers are already active KDE contributors,
and so will be aware of the responsibilities associated with being included
in the module).
Removed (for many of the above reasons) would be Kids, Slick and Ikons -
though they would of course remain available on kde-look for enthusiasts.
Any thoughts on this?
Danny

Re: [kde-artists] KDE4 style proposal (to replace phase)Ok, I'll see if I can find time to port it, especially since it seems
phase is not being ported anyway. :-)
Um, no, it would go in kdeartwork where phase lives now. :-)
(However this means I am going to push, again, for blendColors() in
kdelibs if there still is not such a thing. In branches/3.5 various
forms exist used by Plastik, IIRC Phase, and grepview in KDevelop, and
who knows how many other styles e.g. from kde-look.)
Some well-known themes should probably be retained (Plastik, Keramik),
but I would guess light and riscos could be moved to kdeartwork. But
that's just my $0.02.
Thanks for the feedback!

Re: [kde-artists] KDE4 style proposal (to replace phase)Actually I tend to think of mine being slightly "cleaner" than Phase.
:-) Anyway I like it exactly how it is, but I'd be happy to entertain
suggestions. What would you change about it?
I'm most inclined to work on it if people think it would be beneficial
to have it in KDE4 proper (since AFAIK Phase is not being ported). Are
there any opinions on that?

Re: [kde-artists] KDE4 style proposal (to replace phase)I am wondering what the style phase was intended for....it seems to be a
simple, clean style. The improvements you have made seem to change it to be a
bit more 3d-ish with shiny bits, etc. While this kind of change is not
necessarily bad I think that design/art wise if you intend to change it
thusly you should go "all out" and further the work you have started so that
it represents a solid, complete look.
Bye,
Ken

[kde-artists] Flyer to fix (cross post for maximum effect)Hi,
I made a flyer for the Edu & School day at aKademy but it's badly layouted.
Maybe also the text could be improved. I attach the Scribus source and I hope
some of you are kind enough to help improve it.
I am not artistic at all and I never used scribus previously, that says it
all.
Thanks in advance!
Anne-Marie
PS: I forgot to add I need it for today!

Re: [kde-artists] New mimetype icon for DARHi JB,
You can send any Oxygen related stuff to all at oxygen dash icons dot org. In
addition we have an irc channel on freenode, #oxygen where we discuss the
ongoing development. It would be great if you could join sometime and talk to
us about this. If IRC isn't your thing, just send an email and we can discuss
it thusly.
Of course, this list is good for KDE artwork in general, but for more specific
oxygen stuff the above methods will work much quicker :-)
Thanks,
Ken
